Today, December 7, 2024, millions of Ghanaians are heading to the polls to elect a new president and 275 Members of Parliament in what is widely regarded as a critical moment in the nation’s democratic journey.
Polling stations opened at 7:00 a.m. and will close at 5:00 p.m., with 18,807,854 registered voters expected to participate.
The presidential race is led by two prominent candidates from Northern Ghana: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dr. Bawumia’s campaign has focused on digitalization and economic transformation, while Mr. Mahama has emphasized his extensive governance experience and plans for inclusive development.
The below are list of candidates vying for the presidency:
- Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (New Patriotic Party (NPP))
- John Dramani Mahama (National Democratic Congress (NDC))
- Alan Kyerematen (Independent Candidate, Movement for Change)
- Christian Kwabena Andrews (Ghana Union Movement)
- Kofi Akpaloo (Liberal Party of Ghana)
- Hassan Ayariga (All People’s Congress)
- Nana Akosua Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankuma (Convention People’s Party – CPP)

An unusual aspect of this year’s election is the presence of Akua Donkor, the late candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), on the ballot paper following her demise in October 2024. Her image and party logo remain due to her passing after the printing of the ballots.
This election is expected to shape the political and economic trajectory of the nation, as citizens cast their votes to determine the leaders who will steer Ghana through its next phase of development.
