Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, has introduced Ghana Music Xperience (GMX), a locally developed music streaming platform aimed at promoting and supporting Ghanaian artists.

Launched on Thursday, October 31, 2024, GMX is designed to bridge the gap between Ghanaian musicians and their fans, both locally and globally.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the platform will provide artists with a more sustainable source of income, addressing longstanding issues in the industry.

During the launch, Dr. Bawumia highlited the significance of GMX for Ghana’s music industry, noting that it seeks to address the limited compensation Ghanaian artists receive from foreign streaming services.

“They receive very little from the foreign music streaming apps,” he pointed out, emphasizing that GMX offers a unique solution that would ensure artists are fairly rewarded for their work.

He described the platform as “more than just a music streaming app,” noting that it aims to preserve the work and legacies of Ghanaian musicians.

The presidential candidate expressed that having a platform solely dedicated to Ghanaian music is an essential step forward in the country’s digitalization efforts.

“In the midst of having myriad streaming platforms, having one that is purely dedicated to Ghanaian music and musicians is a welcome addition,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia further explained how issues such as piracy and low earnings from foreign platforms have hindered Ghanaian musicians from capitalizing on their fan base within the country.

“The vast fan base of every Ghanaian musician is Ghanaian, yet they do not make enough money from this strong fan base at home,” he stated.

In closing, Dr. Bawumia called on Ghanaians to support the platform, expressing confidence that it would mark a new chapter for Ghanaian music.

“I am very confident that with the support of all of us, through the patronage of the GMX, the game will now change for our musicians and industry to get their deserved compensation,” he added.
