The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has announced a nationwide strike beginning November 7, citing the government’s delays in implementing a new salary structure for its members.

The decision comes after months of stalled negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) over an overdue pay structure.

According to a statement released by CLOGSAG’s Executive Secretary, Isaac Bampoe Addo, the association is disillusioned with the government’s commitment to finalizing the agreed adjustments, which were established in a memorandum of understanding over a year and a half ago.

CLOGSAG had previously issued a warning on October 22, cautioning that it would resort to industrial action if the October 31 deadline for finalizing the new pay structure was missed.

The strike announcement follows the expiration of this deadline, with Bampoe Addo expressing doubt that the proposed January 1, 2025 implementation date would be met.

“As a result of the long delay in the completion of a New Salary Structure and other Conditions of Service for the Staff of Civil Service and Local Government Service, CLOGSAG has no choice than to ask our members to stay at home on Thursday, November 7th,” Bampoe Addo stated.

Adding to the tension, CLOGSAG has decided to cease any further engagement with FWSC CEO Benjamin Arthur, citing a perceived lack of good faith in the negotiations.

Bampoe Addo declared that CLOGSAG members could no longer trust the current negotiation process, which he claims has not delivered on its promises to improve conditions for civil and local government staff.

The association’s action is expected to impact government operations across the country, with CLOGSAG urging its members to uphold the strike until the government demonstrates a genuine commitment to resolving the issue.
