Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has launched a digital border control system featuring electronic gates (e-gates) at Kotoka International Airport.

The system, designed and developed by an indigenous technology firm, Margins Group, leverages biometric and facial recognition technology to enhance security and streamline the travel experience.

Ghanaian citizens with a Ghanacard can now pass through immigration without interacting with officials, while members of the diaspora and foreign visitors can use the e-gates after pre-registering their biometric data.

Dr. Bawumia hailed the e-gates as a significant advancement in border management, positioning Ghana as a pioneer in integrating such technologies into a single platform.

He emphasized the global relevance of the innovation, noting its parallels to systems in the UK and EU.

“This technology ensures secure, efficient travel while boosting border security and national development,” he said.

Plans are underway to expand the e-gates to other airports, such as Tamale and Kumasi, and to land and sea borders.

Dr. Bawumia credited the Ghanacard’s robust biometric framework as the cornerstone of the system, highlighting its recognition as a valid e-passport by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

He affirmed that the initiative enhances Ghana’s global standing in border security and travel efficiency, making the country a leader in modern border control.
