Ali Adolf, Northern Regional Minister-designate, has announced his plans to address the ‘Kayayei’ phenomena if elected.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, Ali Adolf explained that the issue of ‘Kayayei’ has persisted for years, admitting that the problem stems from unemployment in local communities in the Northern Region, which drives young girls to Accra and other cities in search of work.
When asked how he can erase the issue of Kayayei if given the nod, the Northern Regional Chairman of the NDC reacted by saying more jobs will be established to ensure a more appealing and sustainable environment, which will deter young ladies from leaving their areas.
“This issue of Kakayei is something that affects all of us…I want them (Kayayei) back home and so I will do everything possible to make home attractive and they will start running back home.
“Whatever resources we can put to make home attractive so they leave whatever reason for which they came to Accra and come back home.
“There will be jobs for the youth and when the jobs come nobody will tell them that home is now better than it was, go home,” he stated.
According to Mr Adolf, these programmes would include initiatives in tailoring, hairdressing, farming, and other income-generating ventures tailored to meet the needs of the local economy.
“The Kakayei issue affects all of us.”I want them (Kayayei) to return home, therefore I will do all necessary to make home appealing, and they will begin running back home.
“Whatever resources we can invest to make home appealing so that they leave whatever reason they came to Accra and return home.
“There will be jobs for the youth and when the jobs come nobody will tell them that home is now better than it was, go home,” he told me.
According to Mr Adolf, these programs would include projects in tailoring, hairdressing, farming, and other income-generating activities suited to the requirements of the local community.
