President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, as part of ongoing security sector reforms under his administration.
He has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new IGP, with the swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Friday, March 14.
While no official reason has been given for Dampare’s removal, sources indicate that the decision is part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service.
Dr. Akuffo Dampare, who assumed office as IGP in 2021, was instrumental in implementing key policing reforms, including community engagement initiatives and internal discipline measures within the service.
His tenure was marked by efforts to modernize the force and strengthen public trust in law enforcement.
With COP Yohuno set to take over, expectations are high regarding the direction of policing in Ghana under the new leadership.
