President John Dramani Mahama has launched the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in Tamale, a flagship initiative designed to provide practical skills training and job opportunities for Ghana’s youth.

The programme, under the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment and the National Youth Authority (NYA), aims to train over 10,000 young people in its first phase in 2025, with an ambitious target of reaching more than 100,000 beneficiaries in its second phase in 2026.

With a GH¢300 million budget already secured, the NAP will offer a year-long apprenticeship across various trades such as tailoring, carpentry, hairdressing, and auto mechanics, combining 70% hands-on experience with 30% classroom instruction.

At the launch, President Mahama reaffirmed the government’s commitment to youth empowerment and skills development, describing the NAP as a fulfilment of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s manifesto pledge.

“This programme is not just about jobs, it’s about building sustainable livelihoods and preparing our youth for the demands of the modern workforce,” he said.

The President highlighted the programme’s inclusive approach, allocating 45% of placements to women and 5% to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), with additional provisions for vulnerable groups. Beneficiaries will also receive monthly stipends, start-up kits, and certificates upon completion.

Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare-Addo, lauded the initiative as a transformative step toward reducing youth unemployment and promoting decent work.

He urged young people across the country to seize the opportunity for personal and professional growth.

The NYA’s Chief Executive Officer, Osman Ayariga, added that application forms are available at all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and on the NYA website, emphasising that the process is entirely free.

The NAP stands as a key component of the government’s broader agenda to equip the next generation with employable skills and drive national development.
