Governance expert Dr. Frederick Oduro has strongly criticised the conduct of Ghanaian politicians, stating that they have consistently failed to uphold the ethical standards expected in a democratic society. Speaking to ABC News GH on May 13, Dr. Oduro said, “Politicians in general have not held themselves to the right standards,” stressing that both majority and minority parties are culpable in practices that erode public trust.
He cited the recent incident involving the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, who was seen in a viral video handing over an undisclosed amount of U.S. dollars to controversial figure Nana Agradaa.
While not illegal on its face, Dr. Oduro described the act as symbolic of a troubling trend in Ghanaian politics, where public displays of monetary exchange undermine the credibility of institutions.
Dr. Oduro warned that such acts, whether intended as goodwill or otherwise, send the wrong message to the electorate and threaten the integrity of the country’s democratic culture.
He called for urgent reforms and a renewed sense of ethical leadership from all political actors, insisting that Ghana’s democracy can only thrive when its leaders demonstrate accountability and transparency.
