The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun a city-wide decongestion exercise aimed at clearing street traders and removing obstacles impeding traffic and pedestrian movement within the capital’s busiest zones.

Speaking on ABC Midday News on Monday, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, noted that “this exercise is to ensure there is free flow of traffic and pedestrian movement in the central business”.

He emphasized that the move was not just another routine operation, describing it as a reset for Accra under the current Mayor’s leadership.

Mr. Ankrah outlined that the operation will roll out in three distinct phases over three days.

He added that the AMA does not intend to use force during the exercise and expects minimal resistance due to prior stakeholder engagement.

“The Mayor is in to reset Accra,” he said, stressing the importance of the informal sector.

As part of the broader plan, the Mayor has introduced a 24-hour market operation module, which will be supported by improved street lighting and a dedicated security taskforce.

The initiative is being executed in partnership with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly.

Focus Areas:

  • Day One: AMA Office Enclave, Accra City Hotel, Kimbu Road to Railway Station, ECG Junction to King Tackie Tawiah Junction, Zongo Lane, Opera Square to Adabraka
  • Day Two: Wapco Junction to Kintaki School, Cowlane, UTC Road to Timber Market, Agbogbloshie, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange
  • Day Three: Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Kaneshie (Pramprome Lane and all footbridges)
