Three major teachers’ unions in Ghana — the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) — have jointly expressed deep frustration over what they describe as the government’s undue delay in releasing the exchange rate and initiating payments for the book and research allowance.
At a joint meeting on June 8, 2025, the unions unanimously called on the government to urgently address the matter, stating that the delay has created significant uncertainty and hindered the academic and research activities of their members.
In a joint statement issued on Monday, June 9, the unions emphasized that they would not accept any payment delays beyond September 2025, warning that failure to commence the payment process by June 13 would be considered a formal strike notice.
They described the allowance as a statutory entitlement and a vital resource for advancing teaching, research, and knowledge dissemination.
The unions urged the government to act swiftly to avoid disruptions to the academic calendar and reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the welfare of teachers and the academic community.
