The death toll in the Nkwanta ethnic clashes in Ghana’s Oti Region has risen to seven, following the discovery of five additional fatalities after renewed violence last Sunday between rival ethnic groups.
The unrest, which first erupted last Wednesday, initially claimed two lives, including a farmer and an 18-year-old final-year student of Nkwanta Senior High School (NKWASEC).
The student, who served as the Library Prefect, was tragically killed by a stray bullet on the school compound, plunging the school into chaos and forcing students to flee in panic.
According to school authorities, two female students injured during the incident have since been treated and discharged. The slain student was buried over the weekend.
The latest victims include a 30-year-old farmer and his two relatives who were ambushed and shot dead while attempting to flee from Keri to Shiare.
Their bodies, along with others, have been deposited at St. Joseph’s Hospital morgue in Nkwanta for autopsy.
