Construction has resumed on the long-abandoned Pokuase–Nsawam stretch of the Accra–Kumasi highway after persistent appeals from road users and a one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU).
The stretch, which has been in a deplorable state for years, has subjected commuters, drivers, and vendors to severe discomfort and economic hardship.
Speaking to ABC News GH’s Khadijah Issifu, some drivers and vendors said they welcomed the return of construction machinery but remained cautious, urging government to ensure the project is completed this time.
The project, which commenced in 2022 and was originally scheduled for completion in 2024, stalled due to several challenges, including delayed payments to contractors.
A street hawker lamented that “selling has become a challenge, so it is very good the contractors have returned,” reflecting the struggles traders face daily along the route.
The commuters and vendors further appealed directly to the President to prioritize the project and hold the contractors accountable.
