The Acting Head of Communications at the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Carl Nii Anyetei Sowah, has appealed to traditional rulers to take proactive steps in discouraging the use of live ammunition during cultural festivities.

His remarks follow violent incidents recorded during this year’s Homowo celebrations.

Over the weekend, tensions in Sowutuom resulted in the deaths of three individuals, while two others reportedly lost their lives earlier in Teshie under similar circumstances.

Speaking to ABC News GH, the Commission has expressed worry over the rising cases of firearms use during festival periods.

According to Mr. Sowah, there is a pressing need for community leaders to prioritise safety and ensure the sanctity of traditional events is upheld.

He emphasised that efforts to preserve culture must not come at the expense of human lives and security.
