Security has been intensified in the Nkwanta South Municipality following a fresh wave of violent attacks, with the Ghana Police Service confirming the deployment of additional personnel and equipment to restore calm.

In a statement issued by the Police Regional Headquarters in Dambai on March 26, 2026, the Inspector-General of Police announced that two armoured vehicles, along with officers from the National Police Operations Unit, were dispatched to the area on the night of the attacks.

According to the release, the swift intervention has helped stabilize the situation, with authorities indicating that calm has now been restored.

However, the violence has already claimed lives. A joint security team comprising the Police, Military, Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), Defence Intelligence, and Ghana National Fire Service personnel has recovered five bodies from two separate locations within the municipality. The deceased include three males and two females.

Security agencies have since launched investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the attacks and to identify those responsible. Authorities say efforts are underway to ensure that perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted.

Residents in Nkwanta and surrounding communities have been urged to remain calm and cooperate fully with security personnel. The police also cautioned the public against spreading misinformation or engaging in acts that could further inflame tensions in the area.

The statement was signed by John Nchor, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Region, who reiterated the commitment of Ghana Police to maintaining peace and protecting lives.
