The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for armed robbers who attacked passengers along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District, resulting in the death of a footballer with Berekum Chelsea.
The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at approximately 10:30 p.m., when a VIP bus transporting about 30 players and officials of Berekum Chelsea came under attack while travelling from Samreboi to Berekum.
According to a police statement, patrol teams responded swiftly to distress calls and arrived at the scene, where they found the bus had veered off the road into nearby bushland. The driver reportedly lost control while attempting to escape from six armed men, three of whom were wielding pump-action guns.
During the attack, one of the players, Dominic Frimpong, sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.
In addition to the fatality, another victim, identified as 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GHS 4,500.00 by the assailants.
Police investigators recovered two spent BB cartridges from the scene, which are expected to aid ongoing investigations.
The Regional Police Command has since reinforced security in the area, deploying additional personnel and crime scene experts as efforts intensify to track down the perpetrators.
Authorities have assured the public of swift action in bringing the suspects to justice.
“The public is urged to remain calm and continue to have confidence in the Police while investigations continue,” the statement said.
