Two armed robbery suspects have been shot dead by police following a violent robbery incident targeting a mobile money (MoMo) vendor at Tema Community 5 in the Greater Accra Region.
The incident occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026, at about 8:30 a.m. at Aba Fosuah Plaza, where the victim operates her MoMo business.
According to a press release from the Tema Regional Police Command, one of the suspects, who was riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, approached the vendor under the guise of carrying out a cash-out transaction. As the vendor attempted to process the request, the suspect pulled out a pistol and demanded her bag containing cash.
The victim reportedly resisted, prompting the motorbike rider to join in a struggle over the bag. During the altercation, the pillion passenger shot the vendor in the leg, forcing her to surrender the bag. The suspects then fled the scene on the motorbike.
Police officers from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, who were on security duty nearby, responded swiftly to a distress call and pursued the suspects.
The suspects, who were riding a black Royal motorbike with registration number M-24-GE 778, reportedly opened fire on the pursuing police officers near a junction close to Smart Hotel. The police returned fire, leading to an exchange during which both suspects sustained gunshot wounds and fell off the motorbike.
They were rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment but were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have since been deposited at the police hospital morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy.
A search conducted on the suspects led to the retrieval of a 9mm Luger pistol loaded with ammunition, three Android mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a Royal motorbike key, and cash amounting to GH¢11,390. A Ghana Card belonging to the victim was also found in their possession.
The injured vendor is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition. Police also recovered an empty bullet shell believed to have been discharged during the attack.
The Tema Regional Police Command has assured the public of its continued commitment to maintaining safety and security in the area and urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
