Ghana is set to host a major international conference in Accra in June 2026, aimed at advancing global discussions on reparatory justice in the wake of a newly adopted United Nations resolution addressing the legacy of trans-Atlantic slavery.
The high-level gathering is scheduled for June 17 to 19, 2026, and will be held under the auspices of the President of Ghana and African Union Champion for Reparations, John Dramani Mahama. It follows the UN General Assembly’s recent resolution, which described the trans-Atlantic enslavement of Africans as “the gravest crime against humanity” and received support from 123 member states.
Organisers say the Accra conference is designed as a follow-up platform to translate the resolution into practical global action. It will bring together heads of state and government officials, foreign ministers, academics, legal and historical experts, activists, and representatives of international organisations.
A statement from the organisers noted that the UN resolution represents “a significant milestone in advancing global acknowledgment of historical injustices and the need for structured engagement on reparatory justice.”
The three-day engagement, described as a “High-Level Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice,” is expected to focus on developing coordinated policy responses, institutional arrangements, and long-term international cooperation mechanisms to address reparatory justice issues.
According to the organisers, the expected outcome document will reflect “a collective effort aimed at developing coordinated policy approaches, institutional frameworks and mechanisms for sustained international engagement.”
As part of the programme, a special commemoration of Juneteenth will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, at the Christiansborg Castle in Osu, a historic site linked to the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
