The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has strongly condemned the assault and battery of a midwife at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic by a relative of a patient, describing the incident as “unprovoked” and unacceptable.

In a press release issued on June 5, 2026, the Directorate said the attack occurred on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, while the health worker was enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy. A video of the incident has since circulated on social media, sparking public concern and outrage.

The Directorate stressed its full support for the affected midwife and all health workers across the region, noting that they perform essential duties in the service of the public and must be protected from violence.

“We stand firmly behind the affected midwife and every member of staff across our facilities,” the statement said, adding that health workers must be able to carry out their duties “without fear of physical harm.”

The Directorate commended the swift intervention of the Ghana Police Service, which it said helped restore calm at the facility and led to the arrest of the alleged attacker.

According to the statement, the suspect is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, June 8, 2026. It reiterated that violence against health professionals will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The Directorate further reminded the public that, in line with directives from the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, all grievances at health facilities should be directed through established Client Service Desks rather than through confrontation or violence.

It explained that the Client Service Desks are present in all Ghana Health Service facilities and are mandated to escalate concerns appropriately where necessary.

“Assault is not a channel for redress, and it will not be treated as one,” the statement emphasized.

The Directorate urged patients and relatives to make use of proper complaint mechanisms and to treat health workers with respect, reaffirming its commitment to delivering quality healthcare services across the Greater Accra Region.
