Spain’s World Cup campaign got off to a frustrating start on Monday as they were held to a surprise 0-0 draw by spirited Cape Verde side in Atlanta.
Despite a clear gap in rankings and experience, the African debutants—ranked 64th in the world—matched the European giants with discipline and resilience, producing one of the earliest shocks of the tournament.
Cape Verde, making their first-ever World Cup appearance, relied heavily on an inspired performance from veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, who delivered a series of crucial saves to deny Spain throughout the contest.
Spain, led by coach Luis de la Fuente, controlled possession for long spells but repeatedly failed to convert dominance into goals. Ferran Torres came closest in the first half, striking the crossbar before later being denied by Vozinha, who also kept out efforts from Pedri.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal was introduced from the bench in the second half in an attempt to unlock the Cape Verde defence, but the Barcelona star was unable to change the outcome. In defence, Cape Verde also weathered late pressure, while Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón was called into action to stop a late header from Diney Borges.
After the match, De la Fuente admitted his side fell short in key moments.
“We know we can improve. We know we could have won the game today with what happened. We lacked freshness and being clinical. We have to keep growing, finding everyone’s rhythm. That’s what we’ll do over the next four days. We know our opponent was strong physically. We lacked quality, the final touch that these players usually have. We lacked those details, to score with the chances we have. But football is like that”, he said.
The result represents a major early setback for Spain, who entered the tournament among the favourites, while Cape Verde earn a historic and hard-fought point that will be remembered as one of their finest footballing moments on the global stage.
