A school bus carrying children returning from an excursion was involved in a road crash on the Dzorwulu–Accra Mall stretch on Thursday after a tipper truck rammed into the rear of the vehicle, leaving 11 pupils injured.
The injured children, believed to be lower primary school pupils, were rushed to hospital for treatment following the collision.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the children is receiving critical care at the Police Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while the remaining 10 are being treated at the 37 Military Hospital.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), in a video shared on its official Facebook page, confirmed that the crash involved a tipper truck and a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus transporting the schoolchildren.
Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS said preliminary information indicated that the tipper truck crashed into the rear of the bus, although the exact cause of the accident has not yet been established.
“This is the Fiesta Royale to Accra Mall stretch, where a tipper truck has run into a minibus containing children,” he said.
Footage from the accident scene showed the devastating impact of the collision, with blood stains visible inside the bus, a child’s school bag left behind, and extensive damage to both vehicles.
ADO I Nartey said officers from the GNFS National Headquarters Rescue Team had arrived at the scene to assess the situation and assist in separating the crashed vehicles.
“It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was containing school children. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact,” he added.
Authorities are yet to provide further details on the number of casualties, the condition of the children, or whether any fatalities have been recorded. The cause of the accident is also yet to be determined as emergency responders continue their assessment.
