A fire outbreak has destroyed a significant section of the family home of the late former Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Murtala Mohammed, in Tamale, leaving nine of the property’s 17 rooms damaged.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 5, prompting a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
According to the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, ADO I Hudu Baba, the Service received a distress call at about 3:29 p.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene eight minutes later, at approximately 3:37 p.m., and immediately began rescue and firefighting operations.
He disclosed that two schoolchildren who had become trapped inside one of the affected rooms were safely rescued by the responding firefighters before efforts were concentrated on containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading to the remaining parts of the house.
Although firefighters managed to bring the fire under control, nine rooms were destroyed.
ADO I Hudu Baba said investigators have commenced work to establish the cause of the fire and determine the full extent of the damage.
The incident comes exactly one year after the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the life of Murtala Mohammed and seven others on August 6, 2025.
The victims were travelling from Accra to the Ashanti Region on an official assignment when their helicopter crashed in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region.
Among those who lost their lives were Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, NDC National Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three crew members.
