President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of the Upper East Region that the long-awaited regional airport will be completed within 24 months once construction begins.
The President gave the assurance on Thursday, August 13, 2026, after inspecting the proposed airport site as part of his working visit to the region.
According to President Mahama, the project has reached the procurement stage, with efforts underway to conclude the process and pave the way for construction to begin before the end of the year.
He said the government was keen to move the project forward without unnecessary delays.
“The project is 24 months and I have been following the process of the procurement. I want us to let it go quickly.”
President Mahama explained that the Upper East Regional Airport forms part of a broader government programme to expand airport infrastructure and improve air connectivity across the country.
He said the plan includes the construction of new airports in three regions, namely the Upper East, Upper West and Bono regions.
“There are three airports we will be building. Wa is getting a new airport, the Upper East is getting an airport and then Sunyani is also getting a new airport.”
The President expressed confidence that the procurement process would be completed in time for work to commence by the end of 2026.
Although the official construction timeline has been set at 24 months, he said the contractors had indicated that they could complete the project ahead of schedule.
“Even though they have given 24 months, the contractors assure us that they can do it in a shorter time than that.”
President Mahama further disclosed that he would return to the region to officially cut the sod for the project once the necessary procurement and related processes had been completed.
The proposed airport is expected to strengthen air connectivity in the Upper East Region while supporting trade, investment, tourism and other economic activities in the area.
