A total of 50 aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming national executive elections, with 11 executive slots up for grabs.
Although the party is electing 11 national executives, the positions being contested are nine distinct roles, with three candidates to be elected to the National Vice Chairperson position as First, Second and Third Vice Chairpersons.
The development sets the stage for a competitive internal contest as the party prepares to elect new national officers following the end of the nomination-form purchase period on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
The incumbent National Chairman, Stephen Ayesu Ntim, is not seeking re-election after taking a temporary break from the position in May 2025.
Five aspirants have so far picked forms to contest the National Chairman position. They are former National Chairman Paul Afoko, former General Secretary John Boadu, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, Sammy Crabbe and Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
For the General Secretary position, four aspirants have picked forms, including incumbent Justin Kodua Frimpong, who is seeking a second term.
The other contenders are Eugene Boakye Antwi, Sylvester Tetteh and Charles Dwamena.
Gordon Asare Bediako drops out
Media personality Gordon Asare Bediako has withdrawn from the race for National Communications Director and thrown his support behind Dennis Miracles Aboagye.
Mr Asare Bediako had earlier initiated moves to contest the position but announced his decision to withdraw in a statement issued on Saturday night.
He said the decision followed a “deep reflection, wide consultation with family, friends, and stakeholders across our great party, and prayerful consideration of what is best for the New Patriotic Party at this defining moment; I have decided to withdraw my candidature for the position of National Communications Director.”
He explained that his decision was motivated by a desire to prioritise unity within the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
“This decision has not been an easy one. My ambition to serve in this role was born out of a genuine desire to help rebuild our party’s communication machinery and reposition the NPP for victory. That desire has not diminished, but I have come to the firm conviction that our party’s interest is best served by unity of purpose, not a division of energies. It is in this spirit that I am throwing my full and unreserved support behind Dennis Miracles Aboagye,” he stated.
His withdrawal leaves Dennis Miracles Aboagye and Evans Kodo as the two aspirants listed for the National Communications Director position.

Filing and vetting
The NPP National Officers Elections Committee has clarified that picking up nomination forms does not automatically make an aspirant a valid nominee.
In a statement issued on Saturday evening, Committee Chairman Fred Opare-Ansah said an aspirant becomes a nominee only after properly filing the completed nomination form and all accompanying documents within the prescribed period.
The filing of completed nomination forms begins on Sunday, August 23, 2026, and ends on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The vetting process will subsequently take place from Monday, August 31 to Thursday, September 3, 2026.
The Committee also explained why it has not yet announced a date for the elections.
It said the absence of a balloting date is “deliberate and not an omission”, noting that the party wants the filing, vetting and possible appeals processes to be completed before setting a final date.
According to the Committee, the final list of candidates cannot be determined until vetting and any resulting appeals have been concluded.
It warned that announcing a date too early could create the risk of postponement or suspension if an unresolved appeal affects the eligibility of a candidate.
The Committee therefore said it had retained flexibility in the timetable and would announce a firm date once the field of candidates had sufficiently been settled.
It assured all aspirants that adequate notice would be given of the date, time, venue and procedures for balloting once the date is fixed.
