The Member of Parliament for Bekwai Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Ralph Poku Adusei has rewarded 100 students who excelled in the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with items to support their transition into senior high school.
The beneficiaries received mattresses, suitcases, plastic chop boxes and pillows under the MP’s Student Starter-Pack Scholarship initiative.
Some outstanding students were also presented with laptops, while the MP pledged a monthly stipend of GH¢2,000 to support a student living with a physical disability.
Speaking during the presentation on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, Ralph Poku Adusei said the intervention was necessary to help brilliant students whose parents may face financial difficulties in providing the basic requirements needed for senior high school.
He noted that students in the constituency had recorded disappointing results in previous examinations but said the 2026 BECE results had been encouraging with several candidates obtaining single-digit aggregates and gaining admission to Category A senior high schools.
According to the MP, without such interventions some academically gifted students could struggle to continue their education because of the financial challenges facing their families.
He urged the beneficiaries to remain focused on their education, work hard and aim for higher academic achievements.
The students expressed their appreciation to the MP for the support and pledged to make good use of the opportunity by working harder in school.
Their parents also welcomed the intervention, expressing gratitude for the assistance at a time when families are preparing to meet the financial demands of senior high school education.
SPAM credited with improved BECE performance
Meanwhile, the Head of the Bekwai Municipal Education Directorate, Leticia Obeng has attributed the significant improvement in the municipality’s 2026 BECE performance to a number of interventions, including the introduction of the Special Performance Appraisal Meeting (SPAM).
She explained that SPAM provided an opportunity for teachers to identify academic weaknesses and loopholes among students and take appropriate measures to address them.
Mrs. Obeng described the initiative as a “game changer” and said the Education Directorate was looking forward to rolling it out on a larger scale.
She also commended Ralph Poku Adusei for his contribution to education in the Bekwai Municipality, particularly his support for students and families.
The latest intervention forms part of efforts to encourage academic excellence while providing practical support to students as they begin the next stage of their education.
