Senior Nursing Officer Salomey Awity-Baffoe has been granted bail of GH¢100,000 by the Adenta Circuit Court in connection with the alleged publication of false news linked to the social media account known as “Ghana Jollof”.
The 40-year-old nurse, who is based in Techiman, was granted bail on Monday, October 5, after spending about three weeks in custody.
The court, presided over by Angela Attachie, ordered her to provide two sureties to be justified, with each surety required to be a civil servant earning at least GH¢3,000 a month.
As part of the bail conditions, Awity-Baffoe has also been directed to report to the Hansua Police Station in the Techiman area once every two weeks.
The prosecution, represented by the Deputy Attorney-General, did not oppose the bail application.
Alleged role in Ghana Jollof case
Awity-Baffoe is facing a charge of abetment of crime, specifically the publication of false news, under sections 20(1) and 208 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
However, she has pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution alleges that she acted as a liaison for Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, who is believed to be behind the “Ghana Jollof” social media account.
Kodua, who is believed to be in the United Kingdom, has been declared wanted by the Police in connection with the case.
According to the prosecution, Awity-Baffoe allegedly recruited other individuals to redistribute and circulate videos produced by Kodua across various social media platforms.
Investigators also allegedly uncovered financial links between the two women.
The prosecution said forensic examination of Awity-Baffoe’s mobile phone and her mobile money transaction records revealed transactions it believes are connected to the activities under investigation.
Lawyer welcomes bail
Lead counsel for Awity-Baffoe, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwa, welcomed the court’s decision, describing the bail as a relief after an earlier application for her release was rejected by the High Court.
“In fact, we are extremely happy and grateful to the court for granting Madam Salomey Awiti-Baffoe bail this morning,” he said.
He said the legal team was taking steps to secure the required sureties and complete the administrative processes needed for her release.
“We believe that the process will move faster so that liberty, as the court has ordered, will be restored,” he added.
Another lawyer for the accused, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, had earlier reminded the court that his client had been in custody for three weeks and appealed for her release.
“At the last sitting you remanded the accused for us to report to the court. Accused has been in custody for three weeks. We are entirely in your hands,” counsel told the court.
Case adjourned
The court subsequently granted the GH¢100,000 bail and directed that Awity-Baffoe report to the Hansua Police Station every two weeks while the case continues.
Her lawyers say the immediate priority is to complete the bail conditions and secure her release.
The case has been adjourned to February 2027, when the prosecution is expected to proceed with the matter and provide the defence with the relevant disclosure documents.
