Horace Ekow Ewusi, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Cape Coast North, has formally petitioned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remove Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi from his position as Chairman of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Governing Council.

In his petition, Ewusi argued that Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi’s conduct has been detrimental to the university’s smooth operation and has been driven by a personal agenda rather than the collective interests of the institution.

“I humbly write to bring to your attention the disturbing conduct of the Chairperson of the Governing Council of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, which is affecting the smooth running of the University and further petition your high office to investigate same and further humbly request for his removal,” Ewusi stated.

He emphasized that previous efforts by the community to encourage Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi to act in accordance with his responsibilities have been unsuccessful. Ewusi accused the chairman of exhibiting autocratic tendencies and a lack of adherence to corporate governance principles, making unilateral decisions without consulting other council members.

Ewusi further accused Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi of repeatedly clashing with major university unions, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).

He also cited ongoing tensions between the chairman and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, alleging that Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi’s actions have caused significant division within the university community.

These actions, Ewusi noted, have raised concerns among faculty and staff about the potential negative impact on UCC’s reputation. A notice signed by Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi on August 2 announced the termination of Prof. Boampong’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor, further escalating the controversy.
