The FreeTheCitizens protest continues to unfold peacefully as of 2 PM, according to reports from ABC News GH.
Demonstrators gathered in their numbers on the first day of their campaign, are demanding the release of arrested members of a democracy hub group who had previously protested against illegal mining in the country.
Despite the tension surrounding the issue, no reports of violence have been recorded so far, and the protesters have expressed their commitment to maintaining a peaceful demonstration.
With the theme “FreeTheCitizens and Stop Galamsey Now,” the protest stresses the growing frustrations of citizens regarding illegal mining activities that threaten their livelihoods and the environment.
A peaceful protest turned violent between September 21-23 when demonstrators clashed with police. The GPS accused protesters of blocking roads, dismantling barriers, obstructing traffic, and burning properties at Accra’s 37 Roundabout. Currently, 53 protesters are remanded; 9 are in prison and the rest are in police custody.
In response to the ongoing issues, organizers plan to present a petition to the Attorney General, emphasizing their demand for accountability and action against illegal mining practices.
Tomorrow, the protesters are set to deliver another petition to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
The backdrop of this protest is marked by a previous clash between demonstrators and police from September 21-23, which resulted in accusations of road blockages and property damage.
Amidst the ongoing legal challenges, remanded protesters have expressed their dissatisfaction by singing patriotic songs, stressing their determination to fight for their rights and the future of their country.
