Tyrone Iras Marhguy, a former student of Achimota Senior High School, has been awarded a full scholarship to pursue Computer Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University (Penn).
This scholarship, worth $1.4 million over the next four years, comes after he excelled in the 2023 West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE), achieving grade A in all eight subjects.
His journey to this remarkable achievement began in 2021 when he faced significant challenges in gaining admission to Achimota School due to his Rastafarian dreadlocks.
In 2021, Marhguy was at the center of a national controversy when Achimota School required him to cut his dreadlocks as a precondition for enrollment.
However, with the support of his father and legal intervention, he fought for his right to education and religious expression.
The court ruled in his favor, allowing him to keep his dreadlocks and attend the school, marking the beginning of what he describes as “The Tales from Achimota School.”
Announcing his scholarship on X, Marhguy expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to join Penn’s Class of 2028. He reflected on his journey, noting the challenges he faced and the triumphs that followed.
“With my father and an entire country’s support, we challenged the school’s rules, fighting for my right to education and freedom to express my identity,” he shared, emphasizing the significance of this milestone in his academic and personal journey.
