President Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians of a commitment to free and fair elections as the nation prepares for its upcoming general elections scheduled for December 7th, 2024.
In his final address to the United Nations today as the president of Ghana, he expressed confidence in the readiness and capabilities of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, reinforcing that the electoral process will reflect the true will of the people.
“As my presidency draws to a close, I want to assure this assembly that the upcoming 2024 elections will be free, fair, and transparent. Ghanaians have demonstrated time and again in the last three decades their strong attachment to democracy,” he stated.
Emphasizing the critical role of security in the electoral process, President Akufo-Addo noted that the Electoral Commission, supported by the Ghana Security Services, is well-equipped to ensure that the voices of the Ghanaian people are respected.
His remarks come at a crucial time when the country’s democratic integrity is under global scrutiny.
The president’s assurance resonates with citizens eager to maintain the democratic ideals that have been a hallmark of Ghana’s political landscape for over thirty years.
In addition to his electoral commitments, President Akufo-Addo has called for major reforms within the United Nations Security Council, stressing the need for a more equitable global governance structure.
He highlighted the underrepresentation of Africa, stating that “the [Security] Council does not reflect the realities of today’s world.”
