President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is set to officially commission the newly completed Flower Pot Interchange in Accra on November 19, 2024.
This project seeks to alleviate traffic congestion in critical areas of the city, marks another milestone in the government’s efforts to enhance urban mobility.
The announcement was confirmed by Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications at the Presidency, via a post on Facebook, where he stated, “’Flower Pot’ Interchange to be commissioned by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on 19th November.”
The Flower Pot Interchange, which commenced in 2017, has been constructed by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Ghana Limited at a cost of GH¢147 million.
The interchange features an 802-metre dual carriageway viaduct, strategically placed over the Accra-Tema Motorway and the Flower Pot Roundabout on Spintex Road.
This design is expected to bolster connectivity between northern and southern sections of the motorway, greatly benefiting commuters from high-traffic areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema.
The project includes several strategic additions aimed at easing traffic flow, such as ramps and slip roads.
It features a ramp from Shiashie leading onto the viaduct towards Airport Hills, a connection from the viaduct to the motorway heading to Tema, and a slip road facilitating movement from the motorway to the Boundary Road Roundabout.
Additionally, a new road traverses the old tunnel at East Legon, with a new exit route directed to Cantonments from the Giffard Road Interchange.
Anticipated benefits from the Flower Pot Interchange include smoother traffic flow, reduced congestion, and improved travel times for commuters navigating these heavily used routes.
