The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that American experts will assist Ghana in decoding the black box of the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter that crashed on August 6, killing all eight people on board.
He said the move is to ensure full transparency in determining the cause of the tragic incident.
Aviation expert Wing Commander Sorgbordjor earlier explained that the black box remains the only reliable source of information on what led to the crash.
Addressing journalists in Accra on August 14, Mr Ablakwa disclosed that while the Chinese manufacturers of the Z-9 helicopter are on standby to receive the black box, President Mahama has insisted on involving independent experts to avoid any potential conflict of interest.
“Seeing that the Americans are far removed from this process, and they offer that independent expertise required, I think that we need to applaud the President’s wisdom in this matter, and we need to also really thank our American partners for agreeing to assist us in this regard,” he said.
Mr Ablakwa reiterated the President’s commitment to keeping the public informed at every stage of the investigation.
He assured civil society groups and other concerned parties that there will be no attempt to conceal information, adding that updates will be provided once the American experts arrive and the investigation begins.
“We are waiting for the experts before these investigations are done,” he stated.
