The All Peoples Congress (APC) has officially unveiled Rev. Dr. Samuel Worlanyo Mensah as the running mate of Dr. Hassan Ayariga, the party’s founder and flagbearer, ahead of the upcoming December 7th general elections.
In his speech during the unveiling, Dr. Mensah emphasized that borrowing is not inherently wrong if it is used for proper investment.
He criticized the government’s history of extravagant borrowing to support consumption rather than investment, stating, “Government borrowing to fund infrastructure development to recoup monies borrowed is not a bad practice. But we have witnessed some extravagant borrowing over the years to support consumption instead of investment.”
Dr. Mensah also highlighted the severe economic challenges facing Ghana, pointing out that reserve accounts at the Bank of Ghana have been depleted and pensioners are suffering due to economic cuts.
He lamented the rampant corruption revealed in the Auditor General’s report and urged the government to take more sincere steps in recovering misappropriated funds.
“The amount of money that Ghana loses to corruption, according to the Auditor General’s report, is alarming. If the government had been more sincere and honest by taking steps to recoup these monies into the consolidated funds, it could have transformed Ghana instead of going to the IMF,” he stressed.
As part of the APC’s vision, Dr. Mensah pledged to strengthen anti-corruption agencies and establish a task force to coordinate their efforts. “We must strengthen anti-corruption agencies to investigate and prosecute all corrupt officials to serve as a deterrent,” he said.
With a background in economics, banking, and accounting, Dr. Mensah has served in various roles, including as a technical advisor to the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in 2022.
Additionally, he is the Head Pastor of Christ White House Chapel.
