The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has announced a temporary closure of the Atomic Junction Flyover from today, October 3, to October 22, 2024, for essential repairs on exposed expansion joints.
The closure will be in effect daily from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., during which time traffic will be diverted to alternative routes.
The flyover, located along the N4 highway, connects the busy areas of Adenta, Madina, and Legon, and its damaged joints have been causing concern for motorists due to unsettling noises and a bumpy ride.
The decision to repair the exposed joints comes after reports of discomfort and fear from drivers navigating the flyover.
The coverings of the expansion joints, which are critical for ensuring a smooth driving surface, have deteriorated.
These joints are essential for allowing the structure to expand and contract naturally without cracking, thus ensuring the longevity of the bridge.
A GHA official noted that despite previous efforts to fill the gaps with bitumen, some joints remain exposed, leading to noticeable bumps as vehicles pass over them.
In a statement, the GHA urged drivers and commuters to plan ahead and use alternative routes during the nighttime closure.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of all road users, and this temporary inconvenience will result in a safer and more durable flyover,” a GHA spokesperson said.
