Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has issued a strong warning to Members of Parliament (MPs) against engaging in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Addressing the House on Tuesday, he cautioned that any MP found involved in such activities would face serious consequences.
“… Honourable members, galamsey must be confronted head-on. If any of you happen to be involved in galamsey, please advise yourself. You must be prepared as a house to bite the bullet. We must lead and show the way,” Mr. Bagbin stated.
The Speaker’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, particularly the contamination of water bodies and deforestation.
Despite repeated government crackdowns, galamsey remains widespread, with reports suggesting that some politicians and officials may be complicit.
Mr. Bagbin emphasized the need for MPs to take responsibility and distance themselves from the practice, warning that the integrity of Parliament and the rule of law must be upheld.
Reinforcing his message, Mr. Bagbin made it clear that Parliament would not shield any MP involved in galamsey.
“And please, if I get any information that any of you is involved in galamsey, we will start taking the necessary action from the House,” he stated.
