Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has issued a strong caution to President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to restrain state security agencies from being used as tools of political persecution.
This follows an attempted arrest of Assin South MP, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) at his residence on Wednesday.
Dr. Bawumia, who visited Rev. Fordjour shortly after the incident, described the action as an “unfortunate political persecution.”
He reassured party supporters that the MP was in good spirits despite the attempt to detain him.
“Rev. Fordjour was in high spirit and undaunted. I charge all party faithful to remain calm, steadfast, and law-abiding in this period of unfortunate political persecution,” he said.
Reiterating his concerns, Dr. Bawumia called on President Mahama to urgently intervene and prevent further abuse of state institutions. “I wish to reiterate my earlier submission to the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, to immediately rein in his security operatives.
The security institutions of our country must not be reduced to political tools used to harass and intimidate opponents,” he warned.
He added that Ghanaians would not tolerate a return to “lawlessness and fear,” emphasizing the NPP’s unwavering commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and political tolerance.
