Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has revealed that nurses in Ghana will be able to import vehicles duty-free under a future Bawumia-led government.
Speaking to nursing students at the Korle Bu Nursing and Midwifery Training Institute in Accra on October 23, Napo, as he is popularly known, announced that nurses would be exempted from paying import duties on vehicles with engine capacities under 1.8 litres if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia becomes president in 2025.
This promise was met with enthusiasm by the nursing trainees, who see it as a significant benefit for their profession.
Dr. Prempeh emphasized the NPP’s commitment to improving the livelihoods of nurses, recognizing their essential role in healthcare delivery.
“The NPP recognizes and appreciates the key roles that our nurses play in the provision of healthcare to the people, so we shall also make sure that your lives will be better,” he stated.
In addition to the duty-free vehicle initiative, he reassured the students that the nursing trainee allowance policy, which was reintroduced by the NPP, would continue under a Bawumia administration.
He warned that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former President John Mahama, would scrap the allowance if they returned to power.
Furthermore, Napo highlighted the NPP government’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure through projects like the Agenda 111 hospitals, which would create more jobs for nurses.
He encouraged the nursing community to support Dr. Bawumia and the NPP in the upcoming elections, urging them to vote for the party’s candidates in all 275 constituencies.
“The NPP cares for our nurses,” Dr. Prempeh declared, underscoring the party’s long-standing commitment to healthcare professionals.
