The Ministry of Education has announced a significant change to the Senior High School (SHS) placement process, allowing candidates of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to select their preferred schools only after their results are released.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, revealed the new policy on Wednesday, describing it as part of broader reforms to the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) aimed at empowering students to make more informed decisions.
Previously, students were required to select their Senior High Schools before taking the BECE, often without a clear understanding of their academic performance. The Minister explained that this system frequently resulted in mismatched placements and inefficiencies in admissions.
Addressing the media, Mr. Iddrisu said, “In the past, students selected schools without knowing their aggregate, and that affected the placement system. This time, we will provide a mandatory period of one week after results are declared for students to confirm their choices based on their performance.”
The Education Minister expressed confidence that the revised timeline will enhance fairness, reduce challenges associated with the placement system, and improve overall efficiency in admissions into Senior High Schools.
The new approach is expected to give students a better understanding of their options and align their choices with their actual BECE results, thereby making the school selection process more transparent and equitable.
