Ghana’s Black Princesses have moved a step closer to the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after eliminating South Africa in the penultimate round of the African qualifiers.
The young Ghanaian side progressed with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline, drawing 2-2 in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium before sealing qualification with a hard-fought 1-0 victory in Johannesburg. The result sends the Black Princesses into the final qualifying round with their World Cup dream firmly intact.
Head coach Charles Simpson praised his players for overcoming a tough opponent, describing the South Africans as a significant hurdle on their path to the global showpiece.
“Well, our goal is to go to the World Cup, and South Africa posed to be a challenge for us, so we are extremely happy we could surpass them,” Simpson said after the game.
With Uganda set to provide the final obstacle, Simpson insists preparations will begin immediately as the technical team shifts focus to their next challenge.
“Now we will have time to prepare and look at which one is our next opponent,” he added.
The decisive final round of the qualifiers will be played over two legs between May 1 and May 10, 2026, with a coveted spot at the tournament in Poland at stake. The Black Princesses will be hoping to carry their momentum into the final hurdle and secure a return to the world stage.
