Rockson Konde, Director of Programmes at CENCOR, has urged for a thorough investigation into the recent allegations exchanged by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the National Patriotic Party (NPP) concerning rigging the 2024 elections.
Speaking on ABC IN THE MORNING, Konde emphasized that both parties are unlikely to make such serious claims without any evidence to support their accusations.
He noted that there is an element of truth in both parties’ allegations, suggesting that an inquiry into the matter is necessary to uncover the facts.
“They must do the needful if not the tension in this election will move sticky point which is not good for country,” he said.
Konde further commented on the military’s involvement in these accusations, specifically the NDC’s claim that Brigadier General Michael Opoku of the Ghana Armed Forces has been tasked by President Akufo-Addo to rig the election in favor of the NPP.
He explained that these allegations, while concerning, stem from past incidents where the military was suspected of interference.
However, he pointed out that these historical issues have contributed to a climate of suspicion and doubt among Ghanaians, making it imperative to address these concerns to avoid any potential election manipulation.
Despite these accusations, Konde took the opportunity to commend the Ghana Police Service, led by Inspector General George Akuffo Dampare, for their ongoing efforts to ensure a peaceful and fair election process.
He acknowledged their dedication and readiness, stating that the police have consistently performed their duties with integrity.
While he acknowledged the possibility of a few bad actors, Konde praised the overall professionalism of the security forces in maintaining order and safeguarding the election process.
