A cloud of fear and suspicion has descended upon the small mining community of Manso Watereso in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region following the brutal murder of a Chinese national, Yao Xian.
The 52-year-old miner was found dead with a gunshot wound to his chest on Friday, August 30, in a bush near the town.
Eyewitnesses reported that Yao was last seen around 11 a.m. that day, riding his motorbike on the Watereso road, a route he had routinely taken during his years in the community.
However, this seemingly ordinary journey ended in tragedy.
Authorities quickly responded to the scene, where they discovered Yao’s lifeless body clad in a club T-shirt and black trousers, with blood still oozing from the fatal wound.
Despite immediate efforts to save him, Yao was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. Martin’s Catholic Hospital in Agroyesum.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, where Yao was well-known, deepening the sense of unease among residents.
As investigators delved into the circumstances surrounding Yao’s death, suspicion quickly fell on three of his employees.
Kwadwo Mensah, 32; Robert Agyei, 29; and Abdullah Mohammed, 45, were arrested after providing conflicting accounts of the events leading up to the murder.
A search of their residences uncovered a pump-action gun and live ammunition in Agyei’s possession.
Despite Agyei’s initial claim that the weapon had never been fired, police examinations suggested otherwise, casting further doubt on his story and deepening the mystery of Yao’s untimely demise.
