Comoros head coach Stefano Cusin has admitted his side faces a daunting challenge at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after being drawn in Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Mali and former champions Zambia.
The island nation return to the AFCON stage for only the second time in their history, and Cusin acknowledges that the group represents one of the toughest tests his largely inexperienced squad could face at the tournament in Morocco.
Speaking exclusively to ABC News GH TV, the Comoros tactician described Group A as a gathering of elite sides who have all earned their place through merit.
“All the teams in our group are winners from the qualifiers. So it means all the teams are the best of the best,” Cusin said.
Cusin was particularly respectful of host nation Morocco, tipping the Atlas Lions as the standout side in the group.
“Morocco is the best team in Africa for sure and one of the best in the world. They’re playing at home, so it will be tough,” he noted.
He also highlighted the strength of Mali, who have already proven difficult opponents for Comoros in recent years.
“Mali beat us twice in the World Cup qualifiers. They have a very strong team,” he added.
Zambia, Africa champions in 2012, were also singled out as a dangerous opponent. “Zambia is always a strong team,” Cusin said.
Despite the daunting nature of the group, the Comoros coach made it clear that his ambition goes beyond participation, even acknowledging the historical challenge facing his side.
“In all, these are three teams that Comoros have never beaten before. My challenge is to provide results at the AFCON,” he stressed.
In a bold projection, Cusin also revealed his belief that his team can progress from the group alongside the hosts.
“Morocco and Comoros will progress from Group A,” he predicted.

As Comoros prepare for the continental showpiece, Cusin’s confidence and ambition underline a growing belief within the camp that the team can once again defy expectations, just as they did during their memorable AFCON debut in 2021.
