The Coalition of Aggrieved Customers of Menzgold has issued an urgent appeal to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Minister of Finance for a financial bailout of GHC200 million.
In a statement released on Monday, November 25, 2024, the group highlighted the dire consequences of their ongoing financial struggles, including the deaths of over 230 members since the collapse of the gold dealership firm.
According to the coalition, the requested bailout is a “lifeline” to save lives and prevent further tragedies among affected members.
They proposed that seized assets of Menzgold could be used as a guarantee for the bailout, ensuring the funds could be recovered once ongoing legal proceedings are concluded.
“The assurance with our request is that all seized assets of Menzgold can serve as a form of guarantee,” the statement read.
The group acknowledged the ongoing criminal case involving Menzgold and its leadership, pledging their full cooperation with the Office of the Attorney General.
They stressed that the financial assistance would not interfere with the court process but rather provide temporary relief to victims who have been waiting for justice for years.
The coalition urged the government to respond by the close of Monday, November 25, 2024, emphasizing the urgency of their situation. “Bail us out with GHC200 million which can be retrieved later when the court case is finally disposed of,” they pleaded.
The request comes just weeks before the December 7 elections, adding political pressure to the government to address the plight of the affected customers.
