In a major development, the High Court in Accra has rejected Captain Smart and Media General’s application to dismiss the defamation case brought by Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, Minister for Works and Housing.
The court deemed their application to be without merit, clearing the path for the case to proceed to trial.
The lawsuit centers around Captain Smart’s alleged comments on the “Maakye” morning show, linking Hon. Asenso-Boakye to a contentious matter involving Labianca Company Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority. Hon. Asenso-Boakye vehemently denied the accusations and demanded a retraction and apology, which Captain Smart refused.
With the dismissal of the application, Hon. Asenso-Boakye will have the opportunity to present his case and seek justice for the alleged defamatory statements made against him.
The trial will provide a platform for a thorough examination of the merits of the case, with potential implications for responsible journalism and the consequences of spreading false information.
