The Electoral Commission (EC) has suspended its earlier directive that sought to limit the number of accredited media houses at collation centres during the December 7 elections.
The announcement came from the Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Bossman Asare, at the “Graphic National Development Series” in Accra on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.
The suspension follows concerns raised by media bodies, including the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
Dr. Asare clarified that the initial directive was not intended to restrict media coverage but was aimed at ensuring orderliness at the collation centres.
He explained that the EC was trying to manage the large number of media outlets expected at these locations, particularly in regions with numerous local media stations.
The original plan was to limit accreditation to eight media organisations per constituency. However, Dr. Asare assured that further discussions with relevant stakeholders would lead to the development of a new policy on media access.
While suspending the directive, Dr. Asare reiterated the EC’s commitment to a free and fair election, stressing the importance of media in upholding transparency.
He also highlighted the EC’s preparedness for the upcoming elections, with a goal to match or surpass the 79 percent voter turnout seen in 2020.
The EC, in collaboration with security agencies, is focused on ensuring a smooth process, urging all registered voters to exercise their civic duty responsibly and to participate in the election.
