The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) on Tuesday, June 17, disconnected Ghana Water Limited (GWL) from the national grid over an outstanding debt of GH¢999.6 million, marking a dramatic escalation in its nationwide revenue mobilisation and disconnection campaign.
The move, according to ECG officials, forms part of a broader initiative to recover arrears from indebted public institutions and ensure financial stability in the energy sector.
Following the disconnection of GWL, the ECG task force also visited the premises of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), which was similarly cut off over an unpaid bill of GH¢3,153,484.98. ECG says GBC defaulted on a previously agreed structured payment plan, prompting the action.
In a strong warning, ECG has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Ghana Water Limited to clear its debt or face extended disconnection to key pumping stations critical for national water supply.
The disconnection exercise has raised concerns about service disruption across sectors, but ECG maintains it is a necessary step to compel accountability and sustainability in the utility space.
