The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is poised to initiate discussions with the Minister for Finance, Dr. Amin Adam, aimed at resolving the mounting debt of GHc1,025,918.00 owed for electricity consumption.
The Ministry of Finance is facing imminent disconnection from the national grid due to its outstanding electricity bill, which has accumulated over the past ten months. Despite consuming electricity during this period, the ministry has neglected to settle its monthly bills, resulting in a significant debt burden.
Moreover, the Ministry of Finance has also neglected to allocate funds to various municipal and district assemblies to settle their respective electricity debts.
Sources within the ECG have indicated that addressing the root cause of this issue is imperative. Consequently, the decision has been made to disconnect the Ministry of Finance from the national grid as a means of signaling the seriousness of the situation to relevant authorities if a consensus is not achieved over the settlement.
The ECG is also taking action against Ghana’s Parliament for a GHc23 million debt owed to the power distributor. The ECG national task force has warned that if the debt remains unpaid, they will proceed to disconnect parliament.
This move underscores the ECG’s commitment to ensuring accountability in electricity consumption and payment, as well as the necessity of prompt resolution to prevent further escalation of the debt crisis.
