National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of prioritizing insults over developmental discussions ahead of the 2024 elections.
Agbana criticized the NPP for failing to address critical issues like the economy and job creation, asserting that the opposition NDC remains focused on providing solutions.
“It is important for us to sanitize our politics and ensure that election 2024 is devoid of insult and personal attacks,” he emphasized during an interview with ABC News Ghana.
Agbana’s remarks follow a controversial statement by Samuel Atta Akyea, Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, who labeled former President John Dramani Mahama as a “drunkard.”
The comment sparked widespread outrage and demands for an apology.
However, the NPP Youth Wing, led by National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha, has rejected any calls for retraction, accusing the NDC of hypocrisy by citing instances where NDC officials made derogatory comments about NPP figures without facing similar demands.
Despite the escalating war of words, Agbana stressed the need for a more constructive approach to politics.
“The NPP and the NDC are not the same,” he stated, reaffirming the NDC’s commitment to issues of jobs, the economy, and unity.
“We will not attack our political opponents; we will not subject them to personal vilification,” he added, calling for a reset that puts Ghana on the path of progress and development.
