Tragedy struck the Kubugu community in the Mamprugu Moagduri District of the North East Region after an eight-year-old boy, identified as Adam Mujaheed, drowned in an abandoned brick-making pit filled with water following a heavy weekend downpour.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the child, playing with friends after school, accidentally fell into the flooded pit.
Despite efforts by residents and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), who were assessing flood damage in the area, the boy was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby health facility.
According to the North East Regional Director of NADMO, Alhaji Tahiru Rafiu, the young boy’s body has been released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic customs.
The incident has left the community in mourning, with the child’s mother reportedly fainting from grief and requiring emergency care. Beyond the tragic loss of life, Alhaji Rafiu revealed that the heavy rains had destroyed several homes, displacing many families in the flood-affected area.
In response, NADMO has deployed more officials to fully assess the damage and provide relief support.
Alhaji Rafiu used the occasion to caution the public to exercise heightened safety measures during the rainy season. He said NADMO has intensified its public education campaign, particularly in flood-prone areas, urging residents to move to elevated, safer locations to avoid further tragedies.
