A record 39 candidates have picked up presidential nomination forms from the Electoral Commission (EC) for Ghana’s 2024 election, signaling a notably crowded and competitive race.
The list includes 12 registered political parties and 27 independent candidates, all of whom must submit their completed forms by September 13.
This surge in aspirants has generated significant interest and anticipation among political analysts, who are keen to see the final list of candidates that will appear on the ballot.
The EC has set a filing fee of GH¢100,000 for presidential candidates, though female candidates and those with disabilities are required to pay GH¢75,000.
This fee structure is aimed at making the process accessible while maintaining financial scrutiny.
The number of aspirants this year vastly exceeds the 12 who contested in the 2020 election, indicating a high level of enthusiasm and competition for the top job.
Notable candidates among the 39 include Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, former Minister of Trade and Industry, and Samuel Apea-Danquah, a former presidential staffer.
Other significant figures include businessman George Twum-Barima-Adu and medical doctor Dr. Agnes Ayisha.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has already selected Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer, while the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is fielding former President John Mahama.
The EC has pledged to uphold a transparent and fair election process, urging all candidates to campaign respectfully.
