The Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Peter Kwakye-Ackah, has officially withdrawn his independent candidacy for the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections.
In a statement released on November 18, Mr. Kwakye-Ackah cited the Sekondi High Court’s clearance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Joana Cudjoe, as the primary reason for his decision.
With just 18 days remaining before the December 7 election, the MP emphasized that continuing his independent bid was no longer a viable option.
Mr. Kwakye-Ackah expressed gratitude to the party elders and leaders whose guidance informed his decision.
He stated, “I would like to thank the elders of the party and other leading members for their invaluable counsel that has led to this decision in the supreme interest of the party.”
While his withdrawal aligns with recent developments in the constituency, it remains unclear if he will fully back Madam Cudjoe in her campaign.
This announcement follows a similar move by Dr. Karl Mark Arhin, another independent candidate, who recently stepped down to support Madam Cudjoe.
Dr. Arhin explained during a rally in Kyeikrom, with NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah present, that his candidacy was a temporary strategy to ensure the party’s continued presence amidst legal uncertainties.
